Today’s Snapnames top sales and 14 available related domains

July 21, 2009

I thought it would be interesting to review three of the top keyword domain sales from today’s Snapnames Stimulus Auction and highlight some available related domains.

One word of caution:  It’s a common newbie mistake to register worthless domain variations after a major domain sale is published.  For example, if Treats.com sells for a million, don’t register SuperTastyTreats.com, ReallyGoodTreats.com, etc. and expect to cash in on the buzz.  That said – finding related niche keyword domains can be a useful way to use recent sales to brainstorm new potential domains.  I like to look for exact match keyword variations with good CPC and demand (as measured by Google’s keyword tool).

1. DegreePrograms.com  (sold for $31,555)

$10.74 Cost per click (CPC) with 9,900 monthly Google searches.  This was an exciting auction to watch as it had 12 bidders and went into ‘multiple overtime’ as bids placed in the last few minutes kept extending the auction 5 minutes at a time.   I started watching it in the high 20s and saw it get bid up to $31,555 bit by bit.

Related Available domains:

2. CameraBags.com  (sold for $10,500)

$1.34 CPC with 49,500 Google monthly searches.   Nice category domain name with 13,138 products listed in Google Shopping.

Related Available domains:

3. WirelessModem.com  (sold for $3,000)

$2.46 CPC with 14,800 Google monthly searches.   Over 1,300,000 exact match Google results and 7,236 products listed in Google Shopping.

Related Available domains:

Available domains / new domaining tool prelaunch signup

September 24, 2009

Another  busy week as I’m in the final stages of launching a new domaining tool. If you’d like to have access, signup here for my newsletter – as I’ll be announcing the tool to my subscribers first.

Didn’t have time to hyperlink them all to product examples and potential end users, but here are some interesting exact match domains.  All are available as of the time of this post.

1. RollingHillsCA.com – This GEO domain receives 1,900 monthly Google searches with a CPC of $1.68.   The town itself is small, but has a medium income in excess of $200,000.
Possible uses: parking, minisite, resale to local real estate agent.

2. NJCarDealerships.com – 260 monthly Google searches / $2.90 CPC.  Could make an interesting revenue producing directory.   Provide basic listings for free and sell enhanced listings to dealers who want to set themselves apart from competitors.

3. LinuxMediaServer.com –  1,600 monthly Google searches /  $2.36 CPC

4. WebHostSearchEngine.com – Low search volume (170 monthly), but $9.01 CPC.  Might make a nice affiliate driven hosting resource.

5. MusicalBirthdayCard.com – 480 monthly Google searches / $.90.  Plural version would be better, but this one still has some good possibilities.

* Keep in mind all of the monthly searches are from August (slowest month of year), so I would expect slightly higher demand than listed.

I’m also selling the following domain  today…

LEDChristmasLights.net: LED christmas lights are forecast to be one of the hottest new trends in seasonal lighting this year due to demand for ‘green’ and energy efficient products. How popular will they be? Even in August, the term ‘led christmas lights’ received 33,100 searches on Google, with advertisers paying $1.68 a click to reach this audience.  Ideal for end user resale or mini/full development.  You can view the listing here.

That’s it for today.  Most names posted go within minutes.  If you are interested in receiving future available domains…

I took the first one. I believe Linux is TM’ed and that’s why I didn’t take the 3rd.

Thanks.

admin 09.24.09 at 11:46 pm

@Tony – thanks for your comment. I’m not a lawyer, but it appears Linux allows 3rd parties to register names with linux in them, but may require a ’sub-license’ if a trademark protection is sought for the derivative domain.

Andrew 09.25.09 at 12:27 am

When you say its better to own the plural for generic products like MusicBirthdayCard.com did you just mean that one in particular or do you think that rule applies to all products? For example Mattress.com vs. Mattresses.com which would be better?

admin 09.25.09 at 9:43 am

@Andrew – Was talking specifically about MusicalBirthdayCard.com vs. MusicalBirthdayCards.com based both on search volume and ‘gut feeling’.

I buy both singular and plural names, but In general, I tend to like plurals more for development or end user resale since I think they are more desirable from an end user perspective. I also like to look at the search demand and CPC to determine how people search for different types of products. That said, singular can be better for domain parking (especially long tail), SEO and manufacturer end users.

I like ‘Beds.com’ better than ‘Bed.com’. Mattresses.com vs. Mattress is not quite as clear cut for me – possibly because of the way the plural looks (lots of s’s) and
the fact I already know that Mattress.com is a built out business.

Spreadsheet.com expires – currently listed for $15

September 9, 2009

spreadsheetauction2

Just noticed that Spreadsheet.com expired and is being auctioned off on  GoDaddy Auctions.   Current bid is $15 with the auction ending in 10 days.  Thought it might be a mistake, but the parked page shows that the name is with GoDaddy and expired on 8/15/09.

Should be an interesting one to follow since SpreadSheets.com sold last year for $25,000 at the Traffic/Rick Latona auction.

One thing to remember: Since GoDaddy expired auctions work differently than NameJet/Snapnames, the auction winner is not guaranteed the name, since the owner can still renew the name for a week or so after the auction takes place.

If you would like to receive future updates and available domains before I post them publicly, you can subscribe to my free newsletter here and follow me at @DomainTweeter.

Update: In the last half hour (since I tweeted post), there are now 11 bids with a high bid of $505.

John 09.09.09 at 1:15 pm

I wouldn’t doubt the bids will runaway to a ridiculous amount as it may get renew by the owner anyway if it hits high numbers and/or hit the news. So bidders might just have fun with it lol

admin 09.09.09 at 10:36 pm

Looks like the domain was renewed. Before the auction was closed, over 25 bids were received with a high bid of over $1100.

Domaininator 09.09.09 at 10:58 pm

Hopefully whoever renewed the domain is following this blog. Now they have an idea of what they could sell the domain for.

Ed Muller 09.10.09 at 7:27 am

I have seen namejet reward names back to clients as well – icann has a very low opinion of the pre-release market so we’re always technically at risk in these auctions (but at least we get our money back!).

VGAtoComponent.com

marko 07.18.09 at 4:09 am

imho
i feel it very strange about the ppc and other metrics used, surely these are not even average domain names anyone would type in or any company would commercially brand.
seems too rather concerning to me

admin 07.20.09 at 7:12 pm

Followup: All 14 domains (including the 4 non .coms) have been taken.

admin 07.20.09 at 7:25 pm

marko – Thanks for your comments. The metrics are taken directly from Google’s keyword tool and reflect ‘exact searches’ as opposed to less accurate ‘broad matches’.

Keep in mind that exact match .com keyword domains can be very useful for mini site and SEO purposes since they are currently favored by search engines. For example a domain which receives only one type-in visitor a week can often be developed to rank well for a search phrase which receives hundreds of searches a month.

nappychangingstats

1. NappyChangingBag.comValuate appraisal of $1400. Product examples.  Notes:  Would be a great candidate to list on BargainDomains.  As you can see in the above graphic, since it meets their requirements ($1000+ appraisal with sufficient search volume, the ‘Sell It’ button will let you immediately list it there.

2. CeramicBracelet.comValuate appraisal of $960. Here are some product examples and a list of  manufacturers.

3. WirelessComputer.usValuate appraisal of $730.  1900 Google searches per month at $3.21 per click.

Just added Drop.com.au to my domaining mindmap after reading today’s post by OzDomainer . This is a domain space I’ve largely overlooked, so I thought I would spend a few minutes to see if I’m missing out on a lucrative market segment.

I started by looking at some of the recent .au sales listed on Drop.com.au

carparts.com.au $18,011
printing.com.au $9,221
motorhomes.com.au $5,556
currencytrading.com.au $5,205
livemusic.com.au $4,501
financialadvisor.com.au $3,889
audiobooks.com.au $3,501
motorsport.com.au $2,531
windturbines.com.au $2,001

I’m not too familiar with .au pricing, so I ran the list through valuate.com and came up with the following…

auvaluations

Next, I wanted to see more aftermarket sales, so I used a few of the  historical pricing resources from my mindmap.

domainpricingresources21

I started with one of my favorite resources, NameBio.com which I use frequently for .com valuations,  however it only contained the following 4 .au sales….

namebioscreenshot

It’s always good to try a few different tools, so next I used DomainTools historical pricing tool which located the following high dollar sales…

ausaleshistory

Summary

Based on my quick research, it looks like there are some  interesting  opportunities in the .au namespace.    If you’d like to get involved,  Drop.com.au offers drop catching memberships for a one time fee of $250.00 AUD with a no-catch no-pay guarantee.  They also offer an aftermarket auction membership for $9.95 AUD.

I also came across DNTrade.com.au, a domaining forum dedicated to the .au namespace.

As with any namespace, before making significant purchases, you may want to investigate development potential including current search demand and CPC for .au businesses as well as possible monetization options (as they are likely to differ from US based businesses due to shipping concerns and other factors).

Snapnames showcase auction ends tomorrow at 3:15PM EST. There are currently 24 domains with bids, but as usual expect most of the heavy bidding to occur in the last hour. If you are using Google’s keyword tool to check keyword demand, remember that by default it checks the previous month.     Since demand for many items spikes in December, using this tool in January can provide greatly inflated results.

choc1

For example, I was just checking availability for ‘chocolate gift tower’.   Google’s keyword tool showed 720 monthly searches in December.   However, expanding these results by selecting ’show all columns’ reveals that the term gets about half that amount of searches on most month’s of the year.

choc2

I decided to purchase ChocolateGiftTower.com anyway, but now realize that demand for this product won’t really begin to ramp up until the second  half of the year.

I’ve been working on a few new projects (which I hope to blog about shortly), but since it’s been a while I wanted to post a short pre-screened list of available exact match domains with search demand.   I’ve used Valuate.com to quickly summarize demand and CPC and have linked to product examples where possible.

All are available as of 3:45PM this afternoon.

temppost1

Product examples:

Domain notes:

  • The .net version of OnlineDistanceMBA.com is a live site (lead generation).
  • BusinessPhones.us is available (even though Valuate.com says all extensions taken)
  • One of the .com domains listed above has a  developed site using an IDN (co.nz)

Additional Names for Sale:  I’m also offering the following names today via Sedo.

  • CheapMobileContracts.com –  now in Sedo auction here (ends 1/21).   Multiple extensions registered with Cheap-Mobile-Contracts.com a fully developed site.  Very low reserve considering CheapMobileBroadband.com sold for $4,900.
  • TeterboroNJ.com – exact match GEO name for Teterboro, NJ.  Valuate.com appraisal $890, Estibot $12,000
  • SecureSSLCertificate.com – $6.83 CPC.  Good for minisite or review site.  Many targeted affiliate programs (Netsol, Geotrust, GoDaddy)

Just got around to taking a look at Rick Latona’s new auction platform, Latonas.com and like what I see.   Here’s what I think he is doing right…

1. I can see important domains stats like cost per click (CPC), exact Google searches at a glance for each listing.

This is a big time saver.   If I’m considering bidding on a keyword name, the first thing I do is run it through Google’s keyword tool to see search demand and CPC.   Thanks Rick for saving me some time.  Hopefully, this will encourage better quality listings and bring back some frustrated buyers – no more researching  hundreds of names only to find out that 95% of them have no real demand.

2. Listings and descriptions can be easily scanned from the main auction page. Much nicer than hoverable popovers or small description links that most buyers never click.   It’s always surprised me how many auction platforms bury descriptions a level or two deep and make it hard for sellers to highlight the benefits of their domain and buyers to learn about each domain.

latona

3. Descriptions seem to be more metric based and less ‘fluff’. Don’t know if this is a result of system programming or good human editing, but many of the domain descriptions are actually helpful  (e.g. number of incoming links and pages indexed by Google).  I know these factors can change quickly when a name changes hands, but they can contribute to the value of a name and are good to be aware of.

4. Nice look at feel, including a custom graphic for each name. If a name is worth hundreds or thousands of dollars, it’s probably worth having a graphic artist spend a few minutes making up a good graphic for it.   The only place I have seen this before is at DotSauce’s AQDN.com. It’s nice to see a major auction platform include this and is a very nice touch.

Suggestions

I know the site is still in beta mode, but here are a couple of features I hope they consider adding down the road…

  • Simplified view – I like the detailed info, but some might find it useful to have an option for quick summary view.   Ideally, it would be nice to be able to cut and paste all domains listed on a page to quickly plug them into other services like Valuate.com.
  • Ability to export – The ability to export auction data to .csv or excel format might be helpful for some advanced domainers who have their own tracking systems.
  • Advanced search capability – As a big keyword domainer, I would love to have the ability to search for specific demand/CPC/etc.   E.g. list all .com domains with a CPC over $2 and more than 5,000 exact searches per month.

I think it makes good sense to test the platform out with a lower volume charity auction and wish Rick and Whypark the best of luck in this week’s auction.   If you are interested in trying out the system or bidding in the auction you can follow this link.

Earlier today, I blogged about using Francois’ Valuate.com service to analyze 15 available domains.

Here is an overview of the results…

  • The appraisals varied from $110 – $680
  • Total appraisal for all 15 names was $4,210
  • Highest CPC was $11.50

I listed 7 of the names in my first post – all have since been registered.    Here is the complete list (including the 8 additional names which were obscured in my original post).   The 8 additional names are all available as of 10:30PM tonight.

Wanted to pass along the following  exact match .com keyword domains which are currently available for hand registration (as of 3:00 PM).  All have good search demand with numerous Adwords advertisers. Average cost per click ranges from $2.14 to $26.

1. ThermalPhotoPrinters.com:    (390/2900 searches per month, $8.31 CPC)

thermalprinters

2. DoubleDVDCases.com (880/3600 searches per month, $2.14 CPC)

doubledvdcases

3. RAIDDataRecoveryService.com:    (260 exact monthly searches, $26.32 CPC )

Search demand is a little less than what I usually look for, but the high $26.32 CPC should more than make up for this.   Data recovery domains tend to do especially well with parking and Adsense.  In case you aren’t a techie, RAID stands for a redundant array of disks.  RAID setups are typically used by larger organizations to protect mission critical data.  When these arrays fail, companies often pay thousands of dollars to salvage the data – hence the very high CPC.

domaining mindmap screenshot

If you are interested in what domaining tools I use to buy, sell and monetize domain names, I’ve decided to open up my private domaining mindmap to the domainer community and have just launched a new site called DomainingMindmap.com.

In case you haven’t used a mindmap before, it’s an organized brain dump about a subject.   A good mindmap can be invaluable when trying to master a body of knowledge.   I created DomainingMindmap by reviewing my past 15 years of domaining bookmarks and notes and add to it on a daily basis as I discover new tools. My mindmap currently has 512 topics with notes and annotated links to hundreds of tools including…

  • Domain Research – Keyword research, link popularity, traffic, domain pricing, geo tools, site history, business research and trademark tools.
  • Minisite Development and Domain Monetization – Domain parking, mini site development services, graphic designers, copyrighting and content authors.
  • Registering new domains – Domain suggestion and generation tools, bulk check tools and domainer friendly registrars.
  • Catching expired names – Understanding the drop process, determining which names are dropping, and determining the best way to backorder names.
  • Buying and selling domains – Recommended marketplaces, domain brokers, appraisal services and tools to find end users.
  • Domaining blogs, news, forums and guides as well as Twitter domaining tools.
  • Domain conference information, accounting, financing and domain management tools.

I’ve tried to structure the mindmap so that it can be easily browsed and hope it will be helpful to new domainers as well as seasoned pros. It’s currently in beta mode, so any feedback or suggestions are much appreciated!

Thanks.

Spreadsheet.com expires – currently listed for $15

September 9, 2009

Thanks everyone for helping today with this crowd domaining experiment. With no advance notice, looked like there were about 35 people simultaneously on this page as I announced each name.

If you’d like to be notified when I do this again, you can signup here to receive e-mail notification when the next one starts.

I’d also be interested in what time works best for you for future domain announcements – especially if you missed this one.

Thanks!

Great new experiment, congratulations!

IMO the “photochromatic” niche is a good idea (easy to make a website with an affiliate Amazon Astore for instance – although I don’t know yet how to make it SE friendly…)

I registered : PhotochromaticSunglasses.com (a bit long but it’s 2 words, category definer, about 1000 exact search and $0.90 CPC)

The following are free if somebody wants to register (some hundreds search and some CPC) :

PhotochromicGlasses.com
PhotochromaticGlasses.com
PhotochromicGlass.com (glass for building and windows I assume)

If was disapointed with what I thought was my best finding (automatic day/night car mirrors) :

PhotochromicMirror.com
PhotochromaticMirror.com

Only some marginal search and no CPC. Available for registration anyway.

admin 10.05.09 at 9:48 am

@JeffC – Thanks for posting the additional names.

PhotochromaticSunglasses.com is a nice one as is PhotochromicGlasses.com. If you set up an Astore, you’ll want to include some original content to help make it more search engine friendly. Even something as simple as a few paragraphs in your own words describing the benefits should help.

5 Available Domains and why I like them – 6/17/09

June 17, 2009

Just got back from a week off and thought I would post a quick summary of some available names I came across today…

1. ComputerKeyboardCovers.com

This generic term gets 590 exact Google searches per month with a surprisingly high CPC of $5.12.   Would be good for a minisite or end user sale to the right company.  Product examples.

2. SmallBusinessDocumentManagement.com

This is a LONG domain, but the term has a Google Adwords CPC of $16.63 and 260 exact match monthly searches.    Not a bad choice for a mini site – could pay for itself with just a few clicks a year.   Also has possibilities for end user resale.

3. NarrowcastingSoftware.com

Metrics are OK ($4.05 CPC / 170 monthly searches) , but may improve if narrowcasting trend takes off.  View adwords advertisers for this term.

4. RacquetballGloves.net

With $11.11 CPC, this could be a nice ecommerce enabled minisiteProduct examples.

5. TelephoneServices.us

Metrics are good ($6.92 CPC / 5400 monthly searches) and noticed that just about every other extension (com/net/org/info/mobi/biz/uk/cn) has been taken.   Might make an interesting blog or minisite comparing different phone services (e.g. mobile, VOIP, skype, etc.) available in the US.

That’s it for today. Most names posted go within minutes.  If you are interested in receiving future available minisite domains…

  • Follow me at @DomainTweeter.
  • Since many names I post receive simultaneous registrations, you may want to use a fast registrar and have your billing information pre-programmed. Or use a program like Roboform to fill in your information.

Update: I’m going to try mixing it up a little for the next week or two. Some days I may not post a domain, other days I’ll try to highlight a few different names and do a more detailed writeup of possible minisite concepts or end user sales possibilities.

I’m also going to start emailing some names exclusively to my mailing list subscribers and tweeting others just for my Twitter followers.

For sale today: ImageBackupSoftware.com

ImageBackupSoftware.com  is the authority domain (exact match keyword domain) for ‘Image Backup Software’ a commonly searched term with many current Adwords advertisers.  It is ideal for funneling targeted traffic to an existing web site or generating revenue by parking, development or end user resale.

How can owning ImageBackupSoftware.com help your business?

1. Improve your search engine rankings. Google’s search algorithms are top-secret, but it is widely accepted that they favor authority domains.  Time and time again sites with exact .com keyword matches rank higher than other sites.  Why?  Because authority domains are often used by established industry leaders whose sites are more relevant.  Also, authority domains get linked to more often and links containing exact keywords are more valued by Google.

2. Make it more affordable to advertise on Google. If you are advertising on Adwords, exact match keyword domains can boost your click through rate and reduce your expenses.  They are clicked more because they appear to be more relevant (whether they are or not) and they stand out more, since Google automatically bolds searchwords wherever they appear in an ad.

3. Best of all, exact match keyword domains bring free type-in traffic from visitors who use the URL bar instead of a search box.  This traffic can convert as well as organic search traffic, but is absolutely free and completely independent of search engine rankings.

Whichever business purchases this name will have a natural edge competing in the this market. Purchase it today before one of your competitors does!

This name is being sold today only via a live no-reserve auction ending March 24th and 3:00PM . Since there is no reserve, this name will be sold and will most likely never be available again.

Auction details: The auction is being administered by SnapNames.com, the largest domain aftermarket on the Internet.    Starting bid is set at $2.

10 Free Domains You Can Use to Build a Minisite or Sell to an Enduser.

May 28, 2009

I took last week off, so I wanted to post some extra names today.   All are exact match keyword domains suitable for minisite development, affiliate or SEO use. They are all available for registration as of 3:15PM EST so you can use your favorite registrar.

I’ve checked demand and CPC for each domain using Google’s keyword tool. Since each domain is an exact match keyword domain whose keywords have Adwords advertisers, they can be easily monetized with Adsense/affiliate programs or possibly resold to an end user.

1. RecessedDeckLighting.com

Exact match keyword domain gets 590/searches per month with a CPC of $4.24.   Google’s Shopping search shows  2705 related product matches.

2. RefinancingHomeEquityLoan.com

This one is a long one, but is timely and can easily pay for itself with one click as the current Google CPC estimate for this term is $20.85/click and it has over 30,000 exact match Google results.   It would be interesting to develop this one into a minisite (e.g. AEIOU.com or Whypark) and test for a year.

3. RealTimeCreditCardProcessing.com

Another long one, but the search volume and CPC are good.  880 searches last month for this exact phrase with an estimated $10.78 CPC.  Good for a minisite or end user resale.

4. LargeMovingBoxes.com

$6.14 CPC and an average sales price of $30-$50.   Might be worth spending an hour or two developing a small minisite and monetizing with Adwords or affiliate programs.

5. FireplaceLogHolder.com

$3.04 CPC and 480/searches per month.   Google shows multiple adwords advertisers and over 100 related products. Good for niche minisite or affiliate use.

I thought I would mix it up a little an include some good available .US domains today as well. Interest in .us seems to be picking up.  I noticed that Rick Latona is featuring several in his upcoming auction and that Jamie at DotWeekly just highlighted some good ones on auction today.  Here are my picks – all are currently available for registration.   If you find them useful, please let me know and I will try to include some more in the future.

6. StudentLoanProgram.us ($18.80 CPC with 1000 searches per month)

7. ConferenceCallingServices.us ($21.02 with 2400 seearches per month)

8. PPCAdvertising.us ($6.73 with 6600 searches per month)

9. SurfFishing.us (.79 with 9900 searches per month)

10. TimeshareVacations.us ($3.79 with 2400 searches per month)

July 20, 2009

Domain(s) of the day post – 3 available mini site domains

June 4, 2009

Wanted to post the following three exact match keyword domains suitable for minisite development, affiliate or SEO use. All are currently available for registration as of 2:ooPM EST.

I’ve checked demand and CPC for each domain using Google’s external keyword tool. Since each domain is an exact match keyword domain whose keywords have Adwords advertisers, they can be easily monetized with Adsense/affiliate programs or possibly resold to an end user.

If you’ve been interested in trying out a minisite service like Devhub or Whypark, these might be good candidates….

1. KeyboardSlide.com

$1.41 Cost per click (CPC) with 12,100 broad / 720 exact match Google searches last month.  Here’s an example of the types of products you could feature in a minisite.

keyboardslide

2. PlasticShotGlass.com

$1.29 CPC with 2,900 broad / 1,000 exact monthly Google searches.   Singular version is good for SEO/mini site use.   Can also be used for end user resale (although the plural version would be better for this purpose).   Here are some product examples.

plasticshotglass
3. HomeGymEquipment.us

$3.26 CPC with 60,500 broad /  8,100 monthly Google searches.  8 extensions already taken (com/net/org/info/biz/co.uk/cn/org.uk). Good for SEO / mini site use or end user resale.
