No-reserve auction today / results of Twitter domaining experiment

March 24, 2009

[Update: Looks like SnapNames is experiencing some intermittent technical problems today.  If you have any problems with the auction link,  you might want to wait a few and try again.]

Yesterday,  I tried an experiment on Twitter to virally raise awareness of today’s no-reserve domain auction.   The one day contest invited domainers to estimate the sales price of a domain – ImageBackupSoftware.com.   In return, the person with the closest appraisal would receive 10% of the actual sales price when it is sold today in a no-reserve auction.

The experiment didn’t go completely viral as I had hoped, but exposure was good.  I tweeted about the contest to my 840 followers and was subsequently re-tweeted to approximately 5,500 people by the following Twitter users: @domainingcom @DonnaMahony @Dotsauce @Fantomaster @DomainJuggler.   The following fourteen entries were received with appraisals ranging from $280 to $12,000:

  • $280 @Dluzional
  • $325 @Dnauso
  • $600 @AndrewWright
  • $762 @LovelyLeighAnn
  • $855 @DanSanchez
  • $950 @JamesSun
  • $1733 @TrampArt
  • $1175 @DomainJuggler
  • $2199 @PhoneRated
  • $3200 @Anthonys_Book
  • $3921 @AceFerdnand
  • $4994 @CallerBrian
  • $5375 @IowaDawg
  • $12,000 @EricWard

I’ve just submitted the name to a no-reserve auction at SnapNames ending at 3:15PM EST today.  The auction can be viewed by clicking here or by going to SnapNames.com and searching for ‘ImageBackupSoftware.com’. After the auction I’ll determine the winner and PayPal them  10% of the sales price

Since I don’t normally list good names at no-reserve, I’m hoping that the attention from the contest will justify the risk.  If you are interested in bidding on the name,  I’ve  attached the following metrics and my analysis of this name’s potential…

Domain Metrics

ImageBackupSoftware.com is an exact category match for ‘image backup software’ a popular type of software used to backup complete hard drive images. Google’s sktool estimates this term receives 1,200 searches per month with a $3.33 CPC (cost per click) and a $2,700 Estibot appraisal. Google show 8,340,00 results and Google Shopping shows 5,564 products listed.

Because of the high demand and CPC, this domain is ideal for parking or minisite development. Its also an excellent candidate for end user resale. Existing advertisers for the key phrase include Symantec, Barracuda Networks, DoubleTake, Paragon Software, Carbonite and Acronis.

Using Snapnames to sell product keyword domains

May 12, 2010

My main domaining focus is domain development and end user resale, but I thought it would be interesting to test Snapnames’ auction platform to sell a few .com product domains directly to domainers. I picked 10 names, all with exact match search demand and respectable Valuate.com appraisals ($200 – $15,000) and entered them into an auction ending tomorrow at 3:15 PM EST.

Submission process

I chose names that were in my Moniker.com account, since Moniker offers an integrated ’submit to Snapnames’ option in their control panel. It took less than 5 minutes to submit the 10 names and all were accepted within 24 hours. I probably wouldn’t have gone to the trouble of transferring domains from a different registrar to Moniker just to use the Snapnames platform, but it is a nice perk to using Moniker.

Breaking most of my ‘end user’ rules

When I market names to end users, I always write a detailed description of the domain and its benefits. I also price most good 2 or 3 word domains in the mid $x,xxx range – especially those with good commercial intent which can be developed as niche category killer businesses.  I typically contact Adwords advertisers, owners of similar names with alternate extensions and businesses who may not yet know the benefits of using a good domain to attract additional customers.

Since the names I chose were geared towards fellow domainers, I opted to skip entering a description (something I rarely recommend) and priced the names with a relatively low reserve price of $68. I was tempted to price them at $1 to attract additional attention, but chose the $68 price point to catch the eye of domainers who backorder names at $69. I didn’t research end users and only sent out a handful of e-mails to the owners of alternate extensions of a few of the names.

The names

I picked product keyword domains which I thought were suited for domainer development – either via traditional minisites or newer product based portals. Many of them have multiple ‘lesser’ extensions taken and several of them have high CPCs which lend themselves to Adsense monetization.  Here’s a screenshot I took using Valuate.com which shows CPC and com/net/org availability.

Valuate.com appraisals

Given past experiments with Snapnames, I would only expect a few to sell but am interested to see if any achieve traction and are bid up to respectable amounts.   I’ve hyperlinked the names below in case you are interested in checking out the auctions…

$1 auctions. I do it once in a while to check the real market price of a domain, and the technique is pretty accurate, meaning that the sale price of the auction is, in general close if not higher than auctions with minimum bids, of similar domains. Yet, demands a traffic site, and some guts. I guess I would not do with expensive names.

New Rick Latona T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Auction Cheatsheet

October 19, 2010

Thought it would be useful to make a new domain auction ‘cheatsheet’ for today’s 4:00PM live auction – taking into account reserve prices and using one of my favorite metrics (search demand x CPC) to find keyword .com names which may have more potential to monetize than others.

Once again, due to number of domains involved, I used Estibot  to  gather search demand and CPC instead of performing individual searches using Google’s keyword tool.  I’ve also included links to the auction inventory and to other domainers’ auction picks.

Of course there is much more to selecting good names than analyzing search volume and CPC, but these metrics can be a very useful starting point.

4 Available keyword domains for hand registration.

September 8, 2009

Wanted to pass along the following four .com keyword domains which are currently available for hand registration (as of 10:30PM)…

1. DriftTires.com:    480 / 2,900 (exact / phrase) searches per month at $.90 CPC.     Drifting has it’s own wikipedia page and was featured this in this Fast and The Furious movie.

2. InstantCreditApplication.com – Low search volume (110 / 170 monthly searches), but I like the sound of this one and its current advertisers are paying up to $12.15 a click.

3. PortableGreens.com – The related phrase ‘Portable putting greens‘ gets 1000 exact monthly searches at $4.02 CPC.  This domain is shorter, sounds good and would make a nice mini site or possibly end user sale.

4. LinuxDedicatedWebHosting.com – This one is a mouthful, but it has an average cost per click of $16.56.   Might break even with a few visitors a year, or turn it into a mini site and get some additional search engine traffic.

That’s it for today. Most names posted go within minutes. If you are interested in receiving future available minisite domains…

  • Subscribe here to receive 2 minute advance e-mail notification of available names.
  • Follow me at @DomainTweeter.
  • Since many names I post receive simultaneous registrations, you may want to use a fast registrar and have your billing information pre-programmed. Or use a program like Roboform to fill in your information.

As always, any feedback / comments  appreciated.

Handpicked available keyword domains and my $1 reserve affiliate software experiment.

June 18, 2010

Just got back from some time off and plan on blogging on a more regular basis. Here’s a list of names which are available for hand registration at the time of this post. All are exact match keyword names,  many with good demand and cost per click (CPC). They can be used for parking, turn key e-commerce sites, development or end user resale.

If you are new to domaining or don’t have the cash flow to pay $xxx+ for premium names, these types of names can be a great start. Don’t expect to make hundreds on parking or flip for $xxxx, however with a little development these types of names can earn 10-50 times their reg fee on a yearly basis and sometimes be sold for $xxx to low $xxxx to the right end user. Not bad for a $8 upfront cost.

Here’s today’s list of available names….

1. 3GDataCards.com – $13.14 CPC – Might be good for a Adsense driven minisite

2. AutomaticPlantWateringSystem.com – 1000 exact match searches a month, $1.16 CPC.  Good for free Smartname site as Shopping.com (their Feed network) has some good matches for this product.

3. LasVegasRVParks.com – low CPC, but 1600 exact match searches a month.   Might be good for a directory site using software like this.   Get a few incoming links, provide free listings, them charge a small yearly fee (e.g. $100) to be featured at the top.

4. FootballKickingCamps.com – 590 exact monthly searches.  Another good candidate for a directory.   Here is a list of football camps specializing in kicking.

5. WealthManagers.us – The terms ‘wealth manager’ and ‘wealth managers’ receive over 1,800 monthly searches on Google with an average CPC of about $8.

Trying something new today:  $1 Reserve Auction for AffiliateSoftware.us

If these are not to your liking or have already been registered by the time you read this, I’m offering AffiliateSoftware.us at $1 reserve as an experiment.  To make things interesting, I’m including a partial list of end users and my thoughts for possible development.

Auction Details

This is a no-reserve auction ($1 reserve price) being run by Snapnames.    I chose Snapnames for this auction because they allow $1 reserves (unlike Sedo) and they quickly and automatically transfer ownership of the name to the buyer since they are affiliated with Moniker.com.

Auction is set to end on Monday, June 21st.  You can check the current bid or submit a bid here.

Why I like it…

The phrase ‘affiliate software’ receives 9,900/4,400 (global, local) monthly searches on Google with an average cost per click of $4.48. Affiliate software typically sells for several hundred to several thousand dollars.  Although there are a number of third party services which can manage a company’s affiliate program, more and more businesses are deciding to manage their affiliate programs in house.   To do this, they need….  You guessed it, affiliate software.

Development possibilities

AffiliateSoftware.us can be developed into a blog or affiliate software review site (similar to this one).  The $4.48 CPC makes it a good candidate for Adsense, but the best way to monetize will probably be via affiliate revenue itself (as many of the affiliate software companies offer affiliate programs) as 8-10% of a several hundred dollar sale can add up.

End user prospects

This is a great category .us domain and can be easily marketed to end users, many of which are already paying almost $5 a click to advertise on Google Adwords.   Points to  stress are the SEO and Adwords benefits of an exact match domain and well as the ability to set themselves apart from competitors.

Here is a sampling of companies offering affiliate software.   Most of them are advertising on Adwords for the phrase ‘affiliate software’ and are already paying in excess of $4 a click to put their product in front of businesses searching for affiliate software.     Whether you are interesting in building a paid directory, setting up a Adsense type mini-site or selling this name to and end user, these businesses would be a pretty good place to start…

Additional end users targeting this phrase can also be found via this search.

Thanks for the list. I received it by email and saw it almost immediately.

I could have regged all of the domains but I am not greedy and just took:

Thanks.

I think your suggestion to use it for a Smartname site is right on.

Now I just have to apply there.

Domainers – be careful when using keyword tools in January

January 19, 2010

If you are using Google’s keyword tool to check keyword demand, remember that by default it checks the previous month.     Since demand for many items spikes in December, using this tool in January can provide greatly inflated results.

choc1

For example, I was just checking availability for ‘chocolate gift tower’.   Google’s keyword tool showed 720 monthly searches in December.   However, expanding these results by selecting ’show all columns’ reveals that the term gets about half that amount of searches on most month’s of the year.

choc2

I decided to purchase ChocolateGiftTower.com anyway, but now realize that demand for this product won’t really begin to ramp up until the second  half of the year.

Checking trends for keywords apply to all the months of the year. Some “travel” domains for example have higher trends during the summer months.

admin 01.20.10 at 8:18 am

Definitely, although I’m sometimes guilty of just checking the last month’s figures when reviewing many domains.

If you are using keyword tools to evaluate possible domains purchases, it’s also good to be aware of the ’summer effect’, especially August – when keyword demand for most phrases takes a dive. Of course there are exceptions – such as ‘back to school’ related queries and last minute travel searches.

Ty 01.20.10 at 1:16 pm

If you use the new keyword tool the figures given are rolling 12 month averages, not only that, but if you download them you get the monthly values for the last 12 months.

The new tool is available from a link at the top of the existing tool if you log in to Google.

I guess you should always double check those stats with Google Insights. And don’t forget about Valuate.com ;)

What to do when you receive a domain inquiry (Domain inquiry review checklist)

August 3, 2010

I concentrate on exact match keyword names (mostly .com) and get a good number of unsolicited domain inquiries – both from domainers and end users.   Wanted to share the checklist I use to help determine the potential value of a name before responding to legitimate looking inquiries.

1. Check to see if other extensions registered

The first thing I do is use Valuate.com or Estibot to see at a glance if other extensions have been registered.  I then see if the extensions have live sites and try to determine if the owners are domainers or end users.

2. Look at current Adwords advertisers for the keyword.

3. Try to determine the identity of the person contacting me.
I’ll write a detailed post on this shortly, but for starters I Google the person’s name, e-mail address, phone number and sometimes hostname or IP address.  I then compare this info to my notes from step #1 and #2 and see if I find a match.

4. Check parking/adsense stats
If the name is currently parked, I review the traffic and earning figures for the last year.  I also run a separate report for the last 30 days to see if there has been a current spike in interest.

5. Check Google keyword tool / Google Trends

Demand and cost per click can change, so I always like to take a fresh look at the current search demand and CPC for keywords which make up the name.

6. Do a Google news search for the keywords to see if there are any new developments making the domain more valuable.

7. Check for comparable domain sales

There are a number of different tools out there – I like Namebio.

8. Check current search engine rankings

This can be very useful for negotiation and may be the reason an end user is interested in purchasing the domain.

Did I miss anything?

Leonard Britt 08.03.10 at 1:10 pm

Nice summary – you might want to also check what the prices are of comparable keyword domains in other extensions just to make sure your prices expectations are reasonable compared to the alternatives. If you own the .COM and the .Net is available, you might consider securing the .Net if you are seeking a high $XXX or higher price.

Francois 08.03.10 at 1:11 pm

Yes, the mot important. You respond.

Mike 08.03.10 at 1:56 pm

I do as much as possible to make sure its not some other domainer. I do not sell to other domainers, only end-users.

admin 08.03.10 at 2:29 pm

@Leonard – Good point, especially when dealing with another domainer or when the name is likely to be used for SEO purposes. From personal experience, I haven’t seen many end users go for an alternate extension after making contact for a .com – if the sale doesn’t go through they sometimes go for a longer name or confusing abbreviation, typically still .com.

@Francois – LOL! I do tend to be guilty of over-researching on occasion :)

@Mike – For me it depends on the name (and when/how much I acquired it for), but I know many share your thoughts. Don’t even get me started on blind $60 Sedo offers…

MIke Sullivan 08.03.10 at 3:43 pm

Great checklist. I typically have a sale price in mind for each of my names… at least a bottom, minimum I am willing to accept. I then rethink the details if an offer comes in. Not sure why @Mike would refuse to sell to another domainer, unless you think that you would be getting a low ball offer. But if the right offer came in, why would it matter who it was from?

admin 08.03.10 at 4:35 pm

@MikeSullivan – Thanks Mike. I agree, a good offer is a good offer. But it can be time consuming getting to that point.

Let’s say I have a name I think is worth $3500 to an end user. An initial offer of $250 from an end user can often be brought up to the $xxxx level with good negotiation and some education as to the benefits. Not likely if the low offer is from a domainer looking to flip or resell. Domainer/developers probably fall into a middle category since they can often afford to pay mid-range prices and recoup their investment by increasing traffic to the site with good SEO and content.

After dealing with hundreds of low-ball offers, I can see where Mike’s frustration comes in. Personally, if I get a low offer from a fellow domainer on one of my more premium ‘end user’ type names, I usually just tell them I’m looking for end user pricing and don’t get into specific negotiations. On names which are well suited for domainer/developers (e.g. guide and comparison type names), I prefer dealing with domainers as it is a better fit and the transfer process usually goes faster.

10 Free Domains You Can Use to Build a Minisite or Sell to an Enduser.

May 28, 2009

I took last week off, so I wanted to post some extra names today.   All are exact match keyword domains suitable for minisite development, affiliate or SEO use. They are all available for registration as of 3:15PM EST so you can use your favorite registrar.

I’ve checked demand and CPC for each domain using Google’s keyword tool. Since each domain is an exact match keyword domain whose keywords have Adwords advertisers, they can be easily monetized with Adsense/affiliate programs or possibly resold to an end user.

1. RecessedDeckLighting.com

Exact match keyword domain gets 590/searches per month with a CPC of $4.24.   Google’s Shopping search shows  2705 related product matches.

2. RefinancingHomeEquityLoan.com

This one is a long one, but is timely and can easily pay for itself with one click as the current Google CPC estimate for this term is $20.85/click and it has over 30,000 exact match Google results.   It would be interesting to develop this one into a minisite (e.g. AEIOU.com or Whypark) and test for a year.

3. RealTimeCreditCardProcessing.com

Another long one, but the search volume and CPC are good.  880 searches last month for this exact phrase with an estimated $10.78 CPC.  Good for a minisite or end user resale.

4. LargeMovingBoxes.com

$6.14 CPC and an average sales price of $30-$50.   Might be worth spending an hour or two developing a small minisite and monetizing with Adwords or affiliate programs.

5. FireplaceLogHolder.com

$3.04 CPC and 480/searches per month.   Google shows multiple adwords advertisers and over 100 related products. Good for niche minisite or affiliate use.

I thought I would mix it up a little an include some good available .US domains today as well. Interest in .us seems to be picking up.  I noticed that Rick Latona is featuring several in his upcoming auction and that Jamie at DotWeekly just highlighted some good ones on auction today.  Here are my picks – all are currently available for registration.   If you find them useful, please let me know and I will try to include some more in the future.

6. StudentLoanProgram.us ($18.80 CPC with 1000 searches per month)

7. ConferenceCallingServices.us ($21.02 with 2400 seearches per month)

8. PPCAdvertising.us ($6.73 with 6600 searches per month)

9. SurfFishing.us (.79 with 9900 searches per month)

10. TimeshareVacations.us ($3.79 with 2400 searches per month)

That’s it for today. If you are interested in receiving future available minisite domains…

  • Subscribe here to receive advance e-mail notification of available names.
  • Follow me at @DomainTweeter.
  • Since many names I post receive simultaneous registrations, you may want to use a fast registrar and have your billing information pre-programmed. Or use a program like Roboform to fill in your information.

Update: I’m going to try varying my posting schedule for the next few weeks. Some days I may not post a domain, other days I’ll try to highlight a few different names and do a more detailed writeup of possible minisite concepts or end user sales possibilities.

I’m also going to start emailing some names exclusively to my mailing list subscribers and tweeting others just for my Twitter followers.

Using parked domains to sell to end users

August 6, 2010

Spending a few minutes choosing the right parking provider and customizing a good parking page can add additional credibility to your domain and increase your chances of selling to an end user.

Why I start by parking most domains

Right after I register a domain, I spend 2 minutes repointing the nameservers to one of several different parking companies I use (Parked.com, Smartname, Fabulous and Whypark).  The main reason I park names is to judge existing traffic and to give type-in visitors the ability to contact me if they are interested in the name.   Many names do pay for themselves via parking, but this is secondary as I am primarily interested in end user sales.   I am also not expecting search engine rankings, as this typically requires unique content and a good number of incoming links and is usually best achieved through using a standard hosting account (vs. a parking service).

Example of a name I acquired today

Today I acquired a new domain name in a niche that I hadn’t heard of before.   The name is an exact match for a service which advertisers are currently paying an average of $6.50 CPC.    Search demand is modest, but the name seems ideal for reselling to an end user or perhaps developing into a directory of companies who offer this service.

The domain is CFDModeling.com, which is short for Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling.    One of the common applications of CFD Modeling is to analyze data centers for power consumption and heat load and to determine the best ways to organize and cool data centers.  Here’s one example of a company which offers this service.  The term has over 50,000 exact matches with many different businesses advertising and there have been a number of books written on the subject.

Customization

The parking services I use have good auto-customization feaatures and in many cases, the default parking page will suffice for most names.  Unfortunately, in this case (CFD Modeling), the default pages were not appropriate – probably because the keyword phrase is highly specialized and also contains the word ‘modeling’.

Here is an example of the default page when I parked the page with Parked.com…

cfdmodelingpark1.jpg

Not exactly relevant, so I logged in to Parked.com’s dashboard and changed keyword targeting from ‘CFD Modeling’ to ‘Computational Fluid Dynamics’.    This resulted in the following page, which was slightly more targeted, but still not relevant….

cfdmodelimngpark2.jpg

I decided it might be worth a try to try a different parking service.    I choose Whypark and did a quick search to see if they had any articles relating to CFD Modeling.    They did, so I added the domain to my account and spent about two minutes customizing the page….

  • I selected a picture of a data center
  • I disabled showing of Google Adsense ads
  • I inserted a text link stating the name was for sale

I then updated the nameservers to point the name to Whypark and waited a few minutes for the DNS info to propagate.    Here’s what the parked page now looks like….

finalparked.jpg

Conclusion

The whole process took me about 10 minutes, and I now have a page that I wouldn’t be embarrassed to show to an end user when I begin marketing the name.   In the meantime, anyone who types in the name will see a targeted site and have an easy way to contact me to advertise or buy the name.

Great point. If someone comes to your site and sees something totally unexpected and irrelevant, they will click off your page instantly. But a little tweaking goes a long way and can increase your chance (and value) for resale.

Careful – very realistic Go Daddy Phishing e-mail being sent out this hour

June 21, 2010

I just received three invoices (on three different e-mail accounts) from what appeared to be Godaddy.   I’ve been using a few of my email accounts since the mid-nineties and am used to getting spam and phishing notices, but this one was good and almost fooled  me.    The notice looked real, but was for an .INFO Bulk registration for $357.00.  Since the notice looked legit, the authors were probably counting on people logging in to their accounts via the included links to see if they were mistakenly billed.

Realtime search

I did a Google search to see if there was any mention, but couldn’t find anything.   A Twitter search showed several reports within the last few minutes.   More info (and screenshots) can be found here on Adam Helweh’s blog.

Update: Adam posted that he called GoDaddy billing. They confirmed the message was a scam and that Adam was the 10th person in a row who had just called in about this.

Got the same email, very authentic looking, didn’t click it because my spam filter caught it so I just logged into my GoDaddy account.

Someone is about to have GoDaddy go after them.

Go Daddy 06.21.10 at 8:07 pm

Thanks for spreading awareness. Go Daddy knows about this issue and is making sure customers know how to avoid getting caught by a phishing attempt. Check out this article for tips and info: http://community.godaddy.com/godaddy/consumer-alert-dont-be-a-victim-how-not-to-get-phished/

Will Bob Parson send the GoDaddy’s girls or lawyers? If he sends the GoDaddy girls…my phishing campaign will begin which will include my place of residence on the bottom. Though I hope the GoDaddy girls don’t mind I am in Asia…
